From the Career Center
Summer Programs - Participating in a summer program is a great way for students of all ages to
spend the summer. Summer programs allow students to experience life on a particular college campus, explore new fields of study, earn college credit and make friends with students from all around the world. If you are interested in summer programs, you need to act now. Application deadlines come early in the year. To find a summer program stop by the Career Center or check the web page of the college you are interested in. A few examples of some of the upcoming summer programs are listed below:
The Gene Black Summer Medical Career Program - available to current 11 th and 12 th grade students. This program is best described as a shadow program. Students must be interested in some kind of a medical career. Selected students spend four weeks in July, under the supervision of a health care professional, seeing what it is really like to be a doctor, nurse, x-ray technician, etc. The application is available in the Career Center.
- Harvard Summer School - A selective program for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Spend two months at Harvard, earn college credit, choose from approximately 200 courses.
Application deadline is May 15, 2008
FIDM - June 20 -22. 3 Days of Fashion. Are you intrigued about the worlds of Fashion and Entertainment? Explore careers you may never have heard of in the businesses of Fashion, Interior Design, Beauty Industry, Retailing and Product Development and much more.
- Boston University - High School Honors and Summer Challenge programs. Two great programs with many interesting classes to choose from such as: languages, visual arts, psychology, film and television, computer science, classical studies and much more.
- InnerSpark - California State Summer School for the Arts. Disciplines: film, creative writing, visual arts, music, dance, animation and theater.
Applications are due February 29, 2008.
Summer Discovery - Programs are available on campuses such as: UCLA, UCSB; UCSD; University of Michigan, University of Boston, Cambridge University in England as well as programs in Spain, and Italy and many other U.S. college campuses.
USC - Summer Seminars for high school students. Programs are available in subjects such as: acting, art, animation, film, architecture, entrepreneurship, video game design, journalism and many, many more.
City of Burbank Summer Youth Employment Program - The Youth Employment Programs, within the City of Burbank, hire youth ages 14-21 and place them in departments within the City of Burbank or employ them in work sites with private businesses or non-profit organizations in the City of Burbank and surrounding area. The application packet is available in the Career Center and the deadline to apply is Friday, April 25, 2008. The application is available in the Career Center.
9. Columbia University - Summer Program for high school students is renowned for its academic rigor, instructional excellence and the unique opportunity to experience college life in New York City. Classes are offered in the Arts, Engineering, Math & Science, Computer Science, Social Sciences and much more. There is also a Barcelona Experience program that offers students the opportunity for intellectual and personal growth while immersed in one of the world’s most enriching culturess.
- Georgetown University - You are invited to spend between eight days and ten weeks immersed in the Georgetown University experience. Earn college credit or advance your academic skills, and explore Washington DC. Classes range from SAT preparation to International Relations, American politics, national security and counterintelligence, performing arts and much, much more.
Cornell University Summer Program - You can attend Cornell for one to six weeks and earn an average of three to six college credits. Programs are offered in areas such as: architecture, art, business, engineering, film, law and politics, medicine, science and biological research and many more.
The George Washington University Summer Scholars Program - Programs are offered from 10 days to six-weeks. You can take classes in areas such as: law and evidence, photojournalism, election politics, biomedical engineering, and a writing seminar.
School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston - Explore painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, video, digital photography, and sound art, as well as installation and performance. Make art, share art, live art and earn college credit.
The Carleton Summer Writing Program
Emphasizing a writing process approach, the Summer Writing Program will teach you how to compose academic papers similar to those you will write in college. This program is designed for college-bound students with strong reading and writing abilities. It is not a remedial writing program.
Oxbridge Academic Program - Summer Programs in Europe - Residential programs are offered in England, France ro Spain. Choose from over 65 courses including medicine, law, politics, business, classics, history, criminology, creative writing, drama, photography and French and Spanish language.
There are many other programs being offered at schools such as Northwestern University, Gallaudet University, Johnson & Wales University, Summer in New York City - Barnard College, Carnegie Mellon, Otis College of Art and Design and many more. Pick up details in the Career Center
